Dear Rodd,

1.1.1.

I slept here at my friend Mr. Sturgeon's2 — having learned last night that the Fund Committee voted to me £30, and being desirous of taking home with me the money, if practicable, to appease my pressing claimants by dividing it pro rata — It does not extend to satisfy them but I am thankful to the Society for this relief, and doubt not it was as much as their means could afford to me. As yet I know no particulars, and may perhaps learn nothing beyond the fact of the vote. I must return home, for I fear Matilda must have left her mother.

Yours most sincerely
W Hone

Image of letter for sale on eBay, 2011-01-14, now in Hone Collection, Adelphi University. Hone's application to the Literary Fund had been submitted on 10 February with supporting testimonials from Rodd and Edward Rushton. A letter to John Scott dated 6 February documents the dire circumstances that Hone was able to at least partially alleviate through the £30 granted by the Fund.[return]
