1. William Hone to Dr. Charles West, 25 November, 1840.1-TEI-

My dear Sir

1.1.1.

I am ill — incapable of thinking soundly — or of writing otherwise than briefly — yet harassed by a letter last week from Shepherd, & accruing cares, surmountable ones, though.

Sorry am I to trouble you, but unless I see you, there cannot be a grant from the Literary Fund.

An interview may I think tend to settle all matters. But it should be tomorrow, if you can give the time to meet me here, & to see Mr. Woollaston. My wife & Ellen, thank God, are well. I want the names of all the Committee, for, I hope, a real friend.

I remain, My dear Sir, to you most grateful
William Hone

Wellesley College Library, Special Collections, Last Days of William Hone, f. 16. Given the urgency of Hone's appeal to West and given that Woollaston was one of the persons who wrote to the Literary Fund on Hone's behalf, it seems plausible that Hone is here trying to marshall his best support for the grant application to the Fund.[return]
