Dear Hill

1.1.1.

The letter addressed by me to Mr. Jeffrey that I showed to you I duly forwarded, and this days post brings me an answer from that gentleman, acquainting me that he has referred to the writer of the article in the Edinburgh Review, of whose allegation I complain, for explanation and advice, and that as soon as he receives a reply he will acquaint me with his determination.

You know the writer of the Article and how much his charge annoys me. Now I want no controversy, and it strikes me that your friendly interference will procure justice to me from your friend, and with that I shall be satisfied. I think the note I enclosed to Mr Jeffrey for insertion in the Review may fairly claim it ಌ for it was concise and imputed no motives for the charge of which I complain ಌ Will you see him? I am really being nibbled to death by minnows and a fish of the great deep should rather swim off than assist in such an eternal worry of

Yours most faithfully
W Hone

My fingers are frostbitten -- hence this stiff scrawl.

Matthew Davenport Hill Family Correspondence, C1256, Manuscripts Division, Department of Special Collections, Princeton University Library. The letter concerns a dispute with the Edinburgh Review which had erroneously claimed that Hone had pirated Moore's poems. For further details, see Hone's draft letter to Jeffrey, 5 November, 1823.
