My Dear Mr. Childs

1.1.1.

I have received your kind and sympathetic letter for which I sincerely thank you ā€“ any thing of such a nature from an old friend, at such a time, and under such circumstances is very consoling to the feelings of any one, but especailly to myself when I look back upon the various ways in which it has pleased God to help and sustain me in the many trials and difficulties and my ever beloved Hustband have had to pass through during the 42 years we were together. To those friends who are now interesting themselves for me I hope and trust I shall always acknowledge there kindness for whatever they do. My dear husband often expressed a desire to see you [wondered whether John would come] he was _____ by many dear and kind friends for some time before his departure. His sufferings were very great, but he bore all with Christian patience and subjection to the will of our Heavenly Father, in whom (you know) he has trusted for some years past. He is gone to his next and his spirit has taken its flight among the just made perfect through the blood of Christ our Saviour. [illegible inserted sentence][?] I never left him day or night for the last seven weeks not to take a meal & for the last twelve months he was my constant & anxious care, no one can judge how gradual he sunk but those that were with him. It was a great consolation that all our Children were with him at the last, and most of them able to put their trust in him now as the "father of the [one word][?] and the judge of the [one word][?]."

I assure you it will afford me much pleasure & comfort to have a letter from you at any time. You will perceive by this I am from Tottenham at present, & in an unsettled state but you shall know when all is arranged where I am to take up my future abode.

With kindest regards to Mrs Childs,
I am My dear Friend
Yours sincerely
Sarah Hone

British Library, Add. MS 50746, ff. 43-44. The letter is noteworthy for the number of cross-outs and insertions marking it as a draft. The revisions seem not to add material but rather show Sarah Hone striving to find the right tone to address a long-term and familiar acquaintance of her husband. [return]
