My dear Sir

1.1.1.

I acknowledge the £5 on Saturday — I now acknowledge that it is gone. Mrs. H has had numerous ways for it, & we have no more. I have not received a shilling from anyone else. I anxiously look for your arrival, when I will re-explain as to Clowes, whose account is out of date. I never had it, & nothing ought to have been said about it. It was for printing done in 1829. This & Gray's affair we will talk to you about — as well as Shepherd's.

"Sixpence, & that is borrowed"! Read Madame de Stael — she explains to me why it was not a shilling. You are to get paid for brain sweat — not you! — not yet.

Before you come break into the Chambers of the late Mr. Secretary Black & bring with you all the [one word] of the dear departed. Is there anything in existence memorializing his Frail. How did he go off? with a squeal? was he reckless, or penitent? are his last words remembered before he was light headed? Did he howl to the last? or mutter audibly of Lord Langdale & the Rounds? — Does the world speak of him handsomely? Is his hatchment hung up in the Chapel? Is his Elegy sold there on Saturdays? Does Mr Robert Fletcher wear mourning for him? Have you added weepers to your apparel?

1 October (was yesterday tomorrow)
God bless you my friend
W Hone

[Addressed:]
Dr. West
