1. John Childs to William Hone, 24 December, 1831. [Add. MS 40120, ff. 382-83]

Bungay
24 Dec 1832
My Dear Hone,

Matthew Hill is a member of Parliament, & so is Cobbett--& Dick Potter, & Col Williams. & Weatherall is not, nor is Sugden, nor are many more worthies of the like class --& instead of Tories for Suffolk with worse than that even for our rotten Boro's of Dunwich, Aldborough, and Orford--we have now only two of the Tribe. I wish I had time to tell you all that has passed here & hereafter, during the last week, but I hope we shall meet in London in the course of two or three weeks & then we can have a good long yarn over the fellows who are floored--worsted--done for, thrown out

I hope My Dr Sir my representative is safe in your hands & that by the time this arrives, you will have him fairly spitted, and taking his rounds before your grate-full fire.

To your good wife present the kind remembrance of Mrs Childs & her Husband, & believe me, it affords me the highest gratification to recur to those days, when you stood before the Wickedest tribunal that ever existed in this Country & were saved by the Common sense of a few plain Men. The remembrance of that day ought to be kept fresh in the memory of both old & young. My young ones shall not forget it if I can help it, for on every Xmas day, I give hem the History of your prosecutions, Drink to your health & prosperity, & sing in full chorus, the Carol "Lord Castlereagh doth rule this House" &c. At five oclock to morrow, the toast, "Mr. Hone and his Jury" will be drank by me, & my eight boys with all the noise we can make do you clap your ear to the key hole, & you will hear the sound of our sweet voices. That there may be many happy years in store for you, & those who are near & Dear to you prays your Sincere friend

John Childs

Non Mi Ricardo is not in Parliament, nor is Croker--he of Orford. --but Gully is there--he of the potshard Battle, though the ring is not there.
